Smart Export Guarantee: what you are paid

Last reviewed 7 October 2026. Written for Herne Bay, Kent. Figures are estimates, not quotes.

Short answer. Suppliers set their own export rates, and Ofgem says they must be above zero. On the pages we read on 7 October 2026 they ran from 3p to 18p per kWh, with the best rates reserved for people who also buy their electricity or their install from that supplier.

The rules in brief

Ofgem says suppliers choose the rate and the terms, but the rate must be above zero. Most want a smart meter that records exports and an MCS-certified system or an equivalent scheme. Octopus names MCS or FlexiOrb for its SEG tariff.

How to choose

Do not pick an installer for an export rate alone. A 4 kWp system exports only part of what it makes, so the gap between 4p and 12p is not worth a poor install. Our model uses 12p, the Outgoing Octopus rate, which flatters the numbers a little for anyone on a lower rate. Put your own figure into the estimator.

Questions people ask

Do I have to switch supplier?

Not for the lowest rates, which are open to anyone. The better rates need you to buy electricity or the install from that supplier.

Can I get SEG on plug-in solar?

Normally not. Suppliers want an MCS or equivalent certificate, and plug-in kits do not have one.

Do rates change?

Yes. Variable rates can move at any time. Fixed ones run for the tariff term, often 12 months.
