What solar and a battery cost for a Herne Bay house
Four sizes that suit the roofs here
Every price below assumes 0% VAT, which runs to 31 March 2027. They are our ranges, set around published typical costs and rounded.
- 3 kWp solar, about 7 panels: £4,750 to £6,250. A narrow terrace roof, or a small rear slope.
- 4 kWp solar, about 10 panels: £5,500 to £7,500. The usual size for a semi.
- 4.5 kWp with a 5 kWh battery: £8,500 to £12,500. Solar by day, stored power in the evening.
- 5 kWh battery added to existing solar: £2,750 to £4,750. A 10 kWh battery in the same case is about £5,000 to £8,750.
The Energy Saving Trust says a typical home system is about 4.5 kWp at around £7,600, and that a 5 kWh battery is around £4,600, within a wider range of £1,500 to £10,000.
What the money comes back as
We model a home using 3,000 kWh a year at 26.32p per kWh, which is the Ofgem price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026. On those terms 4 kWp saves about £490 to £730 a year, once you add cheaper bills to payments for exported power.
Put a 5 kWh battery on top and our model adds about £190 a year, because stored power would otherwise be sold for less than you pay to buy it back. For comparison, the Energy Saving Trust gives solar payback of about 9 years in London and 10 to 11 in Manchester, on July 2026 fuel prices.
What moves the price in Herne Bay
Across six Herne Bay wards the 2021 Census counted 18,158 households. About 40% are detached, 28% semi-detached, 12% terraced and 11% in purpose-built flats. A Victorian terrace near the front may fit only 2 to 3 kWp, whereas a detached house in Beltinge or Reculver can take 5 kWp or more.
Scaffold access, a flat or shaded roof, a long cable run to the fuse board and the distance from inverter to battery all move a quote. Ask every installer for panel size in kWp, battery size in kWh, and a list of what is and is not included.
