Worked examples
A ticket for each: price, yearly saving and how long it takes to pay back. The dark marker is how long the equipment lasts, so a bar that runs past it is a warning.

Dark marker on the bar: panels last 25 years or more.
4 kWp (about 10 panels), a typical semi

Dark marker on the bar: panels last 25 years or more.
4.5 kWp + 5 kWh battery
11 to 16 yearsto pay back
Dark marker on the bar: a battery lasts about 10 to 12 years.
5 kWh battery, existing 4 kWp solar
25 to 43 yearsto pay back
Dark marker on the bar: a battery lasts about 10 to 12 years.
5 kWh battery, no solar
12 to 21 yearsto pay back
Dark marker on the bar: a battery lasts about 10 to 12 years.
One approved kit, up to 800W, from about £450
4.5 to 6.5 yearsto pay back
A small kit, so the bar stops well short of the 45 year scale.
Estimates, not quotes. Each bar shows the payback range on a 0 to 45 year scale, with the dark marker at how long the equipment lasts, so a bar that runs past it is a warning. Prices assume 0% VAT (ends 31 March 2027, then 5%). The plug-in payback is our arithmetic on the Energy Saving Trust figures. Full table and method.
The houses of Herne Bay
Our sum of the 2021 Census for six Herne Bay wards (Beltinge, Greenhill, Herne & Broomfield, Heron, Reculver and West Bay): 18,158 households. It is a guide, not a survey of your street.
About 40% of households, and 54% in the Reculver ward and 53% in Beltinge. Room for 5 to 6 kWp and often a 10 kWh battery. See Beltinge and Reculver.
About 28% semis and 12% terraces, with semis at 48% and terraces at 20% in Greenhill. Rear slopes the street cannot see are often easiest. See Greenhill.
About 11% in purpose-built flats overall, but 23% in the Heron ward, with another 13% in a converted or shared house. Shared roofs need the freeholder, and plug-in solar may fit. See the town centre.

Quick answers
As of October 2026 we estimate about £5,500 to £7,500 for 4 kWp of solar, about £8,500 to £12,500 for 4.5 kWp with a 5 kWh battery, and about £2,750 to £4,750 for a 5 kWh battery fitted alone. These are our estimates, set around Energy Saving Trust costs, and are not quotes.
On savings alone a battery usually pays back slowly, often longer than its 10 to 12 year life, unless you can fill it on a cheap overnight tariff or you have an electric car or heat pump. The Energy Saving Trust says savings will not always justify the cost on their own. The estimator shows the numbers for your house.
On 31 March 2027. GOV.UK VAT Notice 708/6 sets the zero rate to that date and the 5% reduced rate from 1 April 2027, unless the rules change. It covers a battery installed in a home on its own as well as solar.
Most house roofs are permitted development. In a conservation area panels must not go on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway, listed buildings need consent, and the equipment must be sited to minimise its effect on appearance. The national planning data lists seven conservation area records that by our reading cover parts of Herne Bay, Herne and Reculver, so we check your address first.
Often yes, with your landlord's or freeholder's written permission, an approved kit of up to 800W, and registration before use. From 27 August 2026 it is not permitted development on a wooden wall, balcony or enclosure, or on a timber-clad part of a building. The Heron ward, which is the town centre, has about 23% of homes in purpose-built flats (Census 2021), so this matters here. See our plug-in guide.
UK Power Networks runs the local network for Kent. Your installer notifies them, and larger systems need their approval before work starts. We handle the paperwork.
Yes, through the Smart Export Guarantee. Suppliers set their own rates, which Ofgem says must be above zero. On the supplier pages we read on 7 October 2026 rates ran from 3p to 18p per kWh, with the best tied to buying your electricity or your install from that supplier. See our SEG guide.
